Usambara Mountains
About Usambara Mountains
A cool, green escarpment in the Eastern Arc Mountains near Lushoto, popular for hiking, waterfalls and a slower pace after the heat and dust of the parks.
The Usambaras were a favourite hill retreat in the German and British colonial periods, and Lushoto still has that quiet highland-town feel. Trails wind through terraced farmland and pockets of ancient rainforest with views back down to the plains β a good way to end a trip on foot rather than in a vehicle.

Practical notes
- β’A relaxed add-on rather than a wildlife stop β go for the walking and the climate.
- β’Roughly halfway between Arusha and the coast, useful as a stopover.
- β’Guesthouses and home-cooked meals rather than lodges β a different pace.
