Mount Meru

About Mount Meru

At 4,562m, Meru is a wildlife-rich three or four day climb inside Arusha National Park, and the best acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro.

The first day is walked with an armed ranger through buffalo and giraffe country. Summit night follows the crater rim with Kilimanjaro filling the horizon at sunrise.

Season by season

Jun – Feb

Best climbing window: dry trails and clear summit views across to Kilimanjaro.

Mar – May

Wet, slippery on the crater rim and generally not recommended.

Practical notes

  • •An armed ranger walks with every group on the lower slopes because of buffalo.
  • •The three-day climb is hard work; four days is far more comfortable.
  • •Summit night follows a narrow crater rim — a head torch and warm layers are essential.
