Lake Natron
About Lake Natron
A caustic, alkaline lake in the Rift Valley that turns deep red with salt-loving algae, and the only regular breeding site in East Africa for lesser flamingos.
Natron sits below Ol Doinyo Lengai, the active “Mountain of God” volcano, in landscape so hostile that little else lives there — which is exactly what makes it a safe flamingo breeding ground. It is a detour off the standard circuit, usually visited between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro on the way to or from a longer safari, or paired with a Lengai climb.

Practical notes
- •A long, rough drive — usually built into a multi-day safari rather than visited alone.
- •Bring a hat and sun protection; there is almost no shade at the lake itself.
- •A guided climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai is an overnight add-on, not a casual walk.
